Travellers on a budget also head to neighbouring Koh Rong Samloem, which has become a haven for anyone wishing to rekindle the rustic ambiance of their backpacker days…

Three places to see in Cambodia’s Southern Islands
Koh Rong
Under an hour’s boat ride from Sihanoukville, Koh Rong has managed to retain its unspoiled island attitude, albeit with the addition of a couple of world-class resorts built in keeping with the natural environment. Thankfully, as Koh Rong is the second largest island in Cambodia (30sq miles), there’s plenty of golden sand loveliness to go round. Away from the more luxurious properties, there’s a lower budget scene where sandy stretches support thatched beach bars and ramshackle guest houses. Koh Touch is the busiest beach, so best avoided if you’re looking for a less crowded island experience.

Koh Russey
Despite the fact that Koh Ruseey is just 10 minutes from the mainland, stepping your first bare foot onto the sand will feel like you’ve escaped into the pages of Robinson Crusoe. Thankfully, you won’t need to build your own shelter, as there’s a rather gorgeous beach resort all ready and waiting for you. Once you’ve had your fill of infinity pools, French fusion food and sunbathing on your own private terrace, why not borrow a bike and pedal off to explore? (Although, don’t expect to find much more than palm trees, white sand and crystal clear shallows…)
Koh Krabey
